Hi Jill Local market has been going since 1200 ish. I think that the stalls are owned by the town and set up on car park using painted marks yo show exactly which goes where. They are fairly lightweight and worried stallholders (who think they may blow away) bring their own 56lb weights along and hang them off the roofs. Market officer (we speak of uniform here) wanders around and takes the cash and allocated pitches. Regulars are regular and know exactly where they will be but new comers are on the outside and gradually filter into a more central poych if they carry on. Stalls are hired out to special events like a French market we had a couple of years ago )not on Saturday = market day. No farmer's market here in Swaffham but they are at Watton where the stalls are again owned by the town (I think).

It has to be done rigth - health and safety and as we dont have ARgyll and BUte Council's support we will have to organise putting it all up ourselves unlike other areas where the council does that Try the indirect approach, get someone in the local TV (best) or Radio to take an interest and start asking on air why the council will not support the market. It is amazing how often that kicks them into action.

does seem that he has just not pushed hard enough. and cos he has been doing stuff with them for so long on so called wee community projects he only sees their line don't rock the boat isa favourite saying of his the squealing wheel gets the grease. I'm afraid that if you are not the ones causing them embarassment then you could be ignored. It is OK if you have people in the council who are supporting you but if not then you might as well make things a bit interesting for them. It strikes me that you have three problems. No money A shortage of media outlets An organiser who is short of drive. To be brutal about it, if your organiser doesn't get his act together your market is going to go belly up, and as the grant money you have got isn't enough, then you might have to take the risk of losing it IF in doing so you got someone competant and successful in charge. But it is easy for me to say this as I don't have to deal with the real people on the ground.
