For most of the time I live in Swindon - considered to be the average town for average UK residents. We have lots of out of town shopping and it is not the panacea you describe. Sure the shops have lots of stock, unfortunately it's the same stock as the shop next door. My shopping experience suggests that your local island traders offer pretty good value and excellent service (compared to the big chains and gaunt warehouses you yearn for). Next think you'll be wanting Harvester pubs and kiddies play areas everywhere.
