I personally did not have much luck with JVC S-VHS edit systems. I have used a lot in post houses and in education settings. I like the Panasonic S-VHS much better. The edit desk doesn't offer time code yet. Sony is new to S-VHS, after the swore they would never make a S-VHS edit system. Bob

While reading article <3ffkpb$ This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , I noticed that This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it (Surfer Rob) said the following:  The edit desk doesn't offer time code yet. Huh?  CTL Time Code is BUILT IN on the edit desk, unless you're referring to the LTC/VITC card for the edit desk machines... IMHO, unless you're going to be using the tape on a machine that supports one of the other time code formats, CTL time code is pretty much a perfect solution to the problem of adding/striping time code without losing one linear audio channel...

Here at KUAT we have both JVC and Panasonic SVHS editing systems. We much prefer the JVC becuase it is MUCH more reliable and _frame_ accurate. In the words of our engineers, Panasonics equoment is, well, junk. It's cheap, but you do get what you pay for. I recommend the JVC BR-S611U feeder, BR-S811U recorder and RM-G870U editing controller. With a TBC it'll run ya about $13K. Add a few bucks more for TC if you really need it ________________________________________________________ :              __    ___    ___                        : :             /__)  /   /  /     /__/   /             : :            /  /___/  /___  /      /               :

We have 3 kinds of time code available with the Edit Desk: CTL time code, built into the decks records address information in the control track, giving you _frame_ accurate editing and post stripe capability without losing an audio track.   Information is output via RS- 422/RS-232 and looks exactly like SMPTE to editing controller. LTC/VITC SMPTE time code is available via plug-in option card.   This gives you full compatibility with field recorders and other decks.   Most customers are sticking with the CTL-TC because it's included in the decks.   Dave Walton Marketing Manager, JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS

Their GY-X2 is plagued with power consumptions problems and is big and bulky. 2) Their official service center on the West coast has refused to remedy problems with our KM-D600 digital switchers, telling us instead to purchase additional peripheral equipment in order for THEIR equipment to functions as THEY advertised. Geez... 3) The '22 series transports are just as cumbersome as Panasonic's. Panasonic has much more proactive technical support; however. Its decks are also as _frame_ accurate in timecode editing as JVC's. Their are NEGATIVES, however: But both companies suck at public relations.  PANASONIC REFUSES TO ADMIT THERE ARE DESIGN FLAWS WITH THEIR DS840/850 SVHS DECKS. JVC refuses to admit design problems with their KMD-600 digital switchers. PANASONIC refuses to address long-standing design glitches with their WJ-MX50 switchers. 2) Their official service center on the West coast has refused to remedy problems with our KM-D600 digital switchers, telling us instead to purchase additional peripheral equipment in order for THEIR equipment to functions as THEY advertised. Geez... Like mentioned above they treat us VERY good. Probably becuase we buy tens of thousands of dollars of equipment from them every year COMPLAINT: We recently discovered that the KM-2500U switcher does NOT sync a program source off the bus. We have a PESA Series H routing system which we input a STL recieve into the KM-2500U and the output is useless. As for Panasonic, I can rave about some of their consumer equipment but NONE of their broadcast equipment is worth anything. We used some grant money to buy a few Panasonic AG-7000 SVHS recorders and we are now using them as tape rewinders because they fail so often. HOWEVER we use about 6 Panasonic Pro Line 4 head consumer decks (sorry model numbers fail me) for VHS backups and they just keep going... we are very rough on them as we WANT them to break so we can get some more JVCs but they WONT... Don't be surprised by your problems with both JVC and Panasonic repair reps
