There was an obscure SF television serial I remember watching as a kid, sometime between 1976 and 1979. I was wondering if anyone on this NG could dig up the name of this particular series, perhaps even direct me to a relevant URL or two? It was historically set in the classic Old West, presumably during the settlement of California in the 1800's, with most of the classic archetypes of that genre: rough-and-tumble gunslingers, schoolmarms, the local sheriff, perhaps even a drunken sawbones or two... I couldn't venture a guess. The SF wrinkle to the series was this: unbeknownst to these townspeople, far underground there existed a high-tech, futuristic human civilization remarkably similar in appearance to the society displayed in Logan's Run, or Brave New World. What exactly they were /doing/ beneath the surface, how they happened to get there, or just why THEIR technology just happened to be centuries ahead of their surface-dwelling cousins escapes me. Anyway, this utopia was only accessible via an elevator hidden in the remote mountains adjacent to the settlement. Through pure chance, one day a child stumbles upon the elevator, and discovers this hidden world beneath his feet. The peaceful subterranean inhabitants swear him to secrecy (it wouldn't be a good idea for the local banditos to have access to our robots or laser weapons, you understand) and from this premise all manner of strangeness ensues. As near as I can recollect (and I'll be the first to admit it isn't much) this particular series was paired with Quark on NBC, and shared the same day/time slot with three other SF, fantasy and adventure-themed programs. The arrangement was there would be a new show on every week, with each series being aired on a more-or-less monthly basis (nearly an eternity for a seven-year old) Well, any takers?
